After Dunkirk the British army urgently needed a simple SMG that could be produced in large numbers, using the concept of the mass-produced German MP38/40, a design was produced in weeks - which satisfied the requirements. Named after its two designers, Shepherd and Turpin, and the Enfield Small Arms Company. the Sten well served the British army, various partisan groups throughout Europe and Asia. Made from steel tubes, sheet stamping, welds, pins and bolts it was the traditional gunsmith’s nightmare, but it worked. The Mk II Sten was the most widely used version.
