Entering French service in 1949 the MAT 49 is an excellent weapon and still in use by police and reserve units. Made from heavy-gauge steel stampings this rugged SMG performed well in Algeria and Indo-China. The pistol grip/magazine housing hinges forward for storage and transport. As the MAT 49 can be fired on automatic only the foregrip is important to keep the gun under control when fired, there is a grip safety.
