Designed in 1941 as a light weapon for troops not carrying a full power service rifle, the M1 became one of the most widespread weapons in US service in WW2 This Carbine fired a special cartridge that was intermediate between a pistol cartridge and a rifle cartridge in power. Developed by Winchester the M1 Carbine was an immediate success and is still a favourite with shooters around the world. Light, well balanced, easy to load and fire its only defect was the lack of range and striking power but at close range this was the ideal weapon. Over 6 million M1 Carbines have been manufactured. Most weapons including this one had the sights altered and bayonet lug fitted as a post-war refit. HKP mark may be Hong Kong Police
