Biography:
1. Empson Middleton was employed as the Superintendent of Ordnance Tradesmen at Birmingham on the 31st December 1813, and appointed The Storekeeper at Waltham Abbey on the 20th January 1818; he was the 52, married, and had 3 children. His salary was £350 per annum, and he had an allowance of £25 for coals and candles, as well as a house upon the Establishment (Supply 5/231 dated the 25th June 1818).
2. According to a Return of the 19th May 1819 (Supply 5/231) Mr. Middleton was still The Storekeeper, then aged 53, with all the other information given above remaining the same.
3. Supply 5/232 dated the 13th September 1820 updated the above entry and the basic details on pay, etc. remained unchanged. WO54/535 of the same date confirmed that he had 3 children and that he lived in Waltham Abbey.
4. A statement "of monies to which the public were entitled to receive credit between the 1st January and the 31st December 1820 shewing the amounts received by the storekeeper" dated the 4th April 1821 (Supply 5/232) indicated that Middleton was living in a Board of Ordnance house, rent free, from the 4th February 1818, and that he was renting some 6 acres of grass land from the Board at a cost of £11.7.0d per annum. His house and gardens were Plots Nos. 1973 and 1974 on the 1825 Waltham Abbey Town Map, on the south side of High bridge Street opposite Powder Mill Lane, or Plot No. 57 on the Town Map in Appendix 1.
5. Return dated the 9th April 1821(Supply 5/232) confirmed that Mr. Middleton was still the Storekeeper, that he was then aged 55, married with three children, and still lived in Waltham Abbey. All other information, as indicated in Note 1, remained the same.
6. A statement "of monies to which the public were entitled to receive credit between the 1st January and the 31st December 1821 shewing the amounts received by the storekeeper" dated 16th Feb 1822 (Supply 5/232) recorded that Midlleton's rented grassland had been reduced to 7 acres, with a rental of £11.17s.0d. WO54/536 dated the 6th February 1822, confirmed that Middleton was appointed Storekeeper at Waltham Abbey on the 20th January 1818, having previously been appoimted the Superintendent of Ordnance Tradesmen at Birmingham on the 31st December 1813, and the Storekeeper at Gravesend on the 1st January 1817. In 1822, he was 56, a married with 3 children. His salary was £350 per annum, he was provided with a house with a coal and candle allowance of £25 per annum, was paid travelling bills of £30, and £13.16.0d in lieu of an attendant Labourer for six months. He also had grass and plantations to the value of £100.
7. WO54/542 dated the 1st April 1823 confirmed Middleton's salary, entitlement to a house, allowance of £25 for coal and candles, and £27.7.6d in lieu of attendance of labour. His family details were unchanged.
8. Return showing the Pay, Allowances and Length of Service of all Employees (WO54/546 dated the 1st October 1824), included Mr. Middleton, who was appointed Storekeeper on the 20th January, 1818. His salary was confirmed as £350 per annum with allowances and gratuities amounting to £104.10.0d, making a total of £454.10.0d per annum. He was entitled to a house, had nearly 11 years' service, was then aged 60, and married with 3 children. WO/550 dated the 1st April 1825 repeats the previous information given.
9. Empson Middleton died in June 1825 (Winters, p.93)
