Biography:
1. James Mathanns was first employed by the Board as an occasional Labourer in the Engineers' Department on the 17th July 1815, earning 2/8d per day. He was a 43-year-old widower with no children. He lived in Waltham Abbey and had been trained as a Baker (WO54/516 dated February 1816).
