Description: Figure 4.8 The X3 flight-spare satellite mounted on the third stage of Black Arrow R4 in the Science Museum. The spare satellite was taken to the launch site and would have been used if a fault had developed in the original. The satellite was mounted on a turntable that included the Waxwing motor and then set on a conical separation bay. The turntable was spun by the small red Imp motors located around its base (Inventory No. 1973-048). (Science & Society Picture Library)
